Overview
Clayton Community Centre, scheduled to open its doors in summer 2020, is on track to achieve Passive House certification, making it the first community centre to achieve Passive House in North America, and Canada’s largest Passive House facility to date. This is roughly equivalent to the top step of the BC Energy Step Code.
Located in the rapidly growing Clayton Heights neighbourhood in Surrey, BC, the centre is designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize greenhouse gas emissions. It combines four City of Surrey community services—recreation, library, arts and parks—into a single 76,000-square foot facility. The project features a state-of-the-art heating and cooling system including automated natural ventilation, triple-glazed windows, and an envelope designed to minimize heat loss. Inside, the unique mix of space features: a public library, a visual arts studio, rehearsal hall music and recording studios; a community kitchen, workshop and tool sharing centre; a gymnasium and fitness centre; child-minding, preschool and childcare spaces; and a café.
