Overview
Join ZEBx for our last webinar in the Net-Zero-Energy-Ready (NZER) Challenge Series. We’ll be hearing lessons learned from two winners of the NZER Challenge, as well as two exciting out-of-province projects that went above and beyond NZER to meet ambitious climate and energy targets. This discussion will touch on many aspects of what have made these projects successful, including their development, design and construction. Bring your questions to find out how NZER buildings have been achieved across different climate zones!
- The Skeena Residence is the first student residence in Canada to be designed and constructed to the Passive House standard. This fully electric building opened its doors to UBC Okanagan students in September 2020.
- 825 Pacific is Canada’s first Passive House arts and culture hub and currently the tallest Passive House building under construction in Vancouver, scheduled for completion in May 2021.
- ZEN Sequel is a multi-unit residential building in Calgary that goes beyond net-zero energy-ready construction to achieve net-zero energy for the majority of units in the building, thanks to photovoltaic panels on the roof of the building. Scheduled for completion later this year, it is one of the first multi-unit residential buildings that qualified under the Canadian Home Builders’ Association’s Net Zero Home Labelling Program.
- The Centennial College A Block Building Expansion is a six-storey addition to a building on the college’s campus in Scarborough, Ontario. It is set to become Canada’s first mass timber, zero-carbon building. The building (currently under construction) is targeting CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building and LEED Gold certifications. Photovoltaic panels will be installed on the roof to produce enough energy on-site to offset the annual carbon emissions by 2.9 tonnes, with the remainder being offset with purchased carbon offsets.

About the CleanBC NZER Challenge Workshop Series
The “CleanBC Net-Zero Energy-Ready Challenge: Workshop Series” consists of six unique workshops over nine deliveries that will run throughout 2020 with the objective to more rapidly advance solutions for zero emission buildings. Through the lens of BC’s most recently celebrated projects that are achieving the highest levels of the BC Energy Step Code and beyond (including Passive House, Canada Green Building Council’s (CaGBC) Zero Carbon Building Standard, LEED, and City of Vancouver Rezoning), participants will work with leading experts across industry silos to identify and advance emerging solutions as well as identify key barriers for scaling adoption.
